Mission & Vision

Tibetan Nehru Memorial Foundation School (TNMFS) started out as a small elementary school to cater to the primary education needs of the children of the early Tibetan settlers at Clement Town. Owned and administered by the Tibetan settlements itself, it grew with the community and its core mission has always been to provide a quality education to the children of this community.

As an autonomous school under the broad directive of the Tibetan Administration in Exile,Dharamsala, TNMFS had always adopted the main aims of Tibetan education in exile including providing an education that roots the children to their culture. As such, besides having Tibetan as the medium of instruction in the primary classes, core curriculum includes instruction in Tibetan history and culture together with Tibetan dance and music.

The growth of the school including boarding options opened the institution to a broader base with children from other Tibetan communities also joining it. It also opened the school to children from the nearby Indian communities, especially in the higher grades where English is the medium. Our mission continues to be to provide children in our care an education that grounds Tibetan children to their cultural heritage while at the same time striving to offer a quality modern education to ensure that they are competitive and comfortable in their world.

Our best hope is to instill in the children a sense of the special history and needs of the Tibetan community at this time, a realization of their own responsibilities as representatives of a special community so that in time, at least the best of them may live up to our school motto of ‘Come to Learn, Go to Serve’!
