The school was founded in 1965 by the Late Gungthang Tsultrim. It is a co-educational residential cum day school, run by Tibetan Nehru Memorial Foundation, Clement town (registered Society bearing Registration No.476 under the Society Registration Act of 1860).

Tibetan Nehru Memorial Foundation School (TNMFS) started out as a small elementary school to cater to the primary education needs of the children of the early Tibetan settlers at Clement Town. Owned and administered by the Tibetan settlements itself, it grew with the community and its core mission has always been to provide a quality education to the children of this community.
As an autonomous school under the broad directive of the Tibetan Administration in Exile,Dharamsala, TNMFS had always adopted the main aims of Tibetan education in exile including providing an education that roots the children to their culture.
